Nokia CK-15W, Nokia’s heads-up colour display fully installed handsfree car kit

will show your contacts and allow you to make and receive calls without having to looking at your

phone, it connects to your phone via the cordless bluetooth connection so your phone will need to be

bluetooth to work with this kit.

Parrot CK3200, again a heads-up display, bluetooth connection, fully installed

handsfree car kit and again a bluetooth only connection. The main difference between the CK3200

and the Nokia CK-15W is the way its installed into your car. This kit is dependant upon using the cars

own radios speakers and may require an adaptor lead if your car radio is not din compatible.

Parrot CK3400, all the features of the CK3200 including GPS anvigation

          Bluetooth verses a cradle connection

Once upon a time the only car kits available were fully installed car kits with a dash board mounted

cradle to hold the phone in place.

The good thing about this was the direct connection to your phone which not only gave you

Handsfree but also three other useful things :-

1.    The ability to charge the phone while its in the cradle

2.    External antenna to improve signal strength

3. The ability to drop the phone into a stable cradle where you could see the display easily

The drawback is that not all cars lend themselves to cradles being fitted to the dash board and you could be left with some unsightly scares, also there’s always the problem when it comes to upgrading your phone and the new one doesn’t fit your car kit and no adaptors or upgrades

are available….sound familiar..?

The benefit of Bluetooth is that more recently most bluetooth phones are compatible

with most bluetooth car kits plus a host of other accessories.

Of course there are the odd unfortunate exceptions to this rule but generally bluetooth is now

pretty universally compatible . you just have to make sure the phone has bluetooth!

A Bluetooth connection can provide data and audio to be sent cordlessly to the car kit

but it cannot provide a cordless charging facility or a cordless external antenna connection.

Of course the cellular coverage in the UK is generally good enough to live without an external antenna and put up with the drop out in signal from time to time, also you can always use a cigar charger to charge the phone, its not ideal but it’s a compromise.

The biggest benefit more recently in the life of bluetooth is the immergence of heads-up colour display bluetooth car kits, as it almost brings the phones display back up in front of you

again, actually its just up-loaded contact details from the phone that you see in most cases

and not text messages or other display information from your phone, but its enough to be

able to make and receive calls from your contact directory without looking at your phone

which is the important thing.
